Pediatric Neurosurgery

Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowship at the BC Children’s hospital provides a 1 year fellowship for fully trained neurosurgeons, who wish special additional training in pediatric neurosurgery.

Our Fellowship training program has run continuously for over 25 years, and we have trained Fellows from across the globe including Canada, The United States, Brazil, UK, Ireland, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Turkey, Lebanon, Yemen, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Australia, and others.  Many of our past Fellows are now well established Academic Pediatric Neurosurgeons.

BC Children’s Hospital is a pediatric teaching institution of the University of British Columbia.   The Division of Neurosurgery has 3 full-time academic neurosurgeons, and is a training site within the UBC Neurosurgery training program and part of the UBC Division of Neurosurgery.  We provide the full spectrum of outpatient, operative, and inpatient services for all Pediatric Neurosurgical conditions, including trauma, neuro-oncology, hydrocephalus, epilepsy surgery, surgical spasticity management, spinal dysraphism, congenital abnormalities and other conditions.  The Division performs 250-300 operations per year, with 1800 clinic visits.

The Clinical Fellow operates, provides in-hospital patient care, and outpatient care, alongside the Faculty Neurosurgeons, the Resident, and at times with a second fellow.  The Fellow provides first call coverage (home call in the evenings and nights) for BC Children’s Hospital, covering our inpatients and emergency referrals.  Fellows are expected to complete a clinical research project with a Division Faculty member, during their 12-month fellowship, and are encouraged and supported to attend a pediatric neurosurgery conference to present their work.

Fellows are paid a salary to help cover expenses while they live in Vancouver for the year, and benefits such as health/dental insurance for the fellow and their immediate family (partner/children).
